Catholic Charities recently expanded its services to include Peer Support Services, which recognizes a growing need for mental health and recovery support within the community. These new services were launched in May.
What are Peer Support Services?
Peer Support Services are effective because they allow an individual with lived experience to accompany others who are currently facing similar challenges, particularly related to mental health and/or substance use disorder.
This shared experience fosters a meaningful connection and mutual understanding, leading to improved outcomes for those struggling. These services are based on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration model.
Who provides Peer Support?
Peer Support Specialists are individuals who have personal experience with successfully navigating their own mental health and/or recovery challenges. They undergo formal training in core competencies, such as active listening, trauma-informed care, ethics and recovery principles, as well as state certification to qualify for this role. Peer Support Specialists engage in ongoing professional development to maintain certification and stay current with best practices.
How do Peer Support Specialists help?
They provide support through one-on-one mentoring, virtual platforms, group facilitation, advocacy and helping individuals navigate systems of care. Their unique role bridges the gap between clinical services and community-based recovery, offering hope, empowerment and a sense of belonging.
Their role complements that of therapists and case managers by offering additional support to clients working towards their mental health and/or recovery goals. A crucial aspect of their support is providing hope, drawing on their own journey to demonstrate that recovery and mental health goals are achievable.
Catholic Charities is now offering Peer Support Services to individuals across the Diocese of Green Bay at no cost. In addition, thanks to a grant from the Provident Foundation, specific Peer Support Groups will be available for youth with a mental health diagnosis in Marinette.
If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about or participating in Peer Support Services, you can contact a Peer Support Specialist via text or phone at (715) 330-4354. All services are free and confidential.
