Are you a community agency or organization with an immigrant/refugee group you feel could benefit from a deep dive into all things housing? In this course, students will participate in a 4-part program on how to create a healthy living space inside and out. It will also include lessons on effectively communicating with landlords, understanding your rights as a tenant, building positive relationships with your neighbors, and what to keep in mind when it’s time to move. This class will help refugee and immigrant parents learn and navigate challenges that come with parenting in a new community. We will learn about parenting practices that are encouraged here and practices that may be what they are used to in their home country. Other talking points may include how their children will adjust to new environments like school. We will also explore how to deal with children making friends outside of their culture.
This class will explore ways to eat well and on a budget. We will discuss local grocery options, nutrition guidelines for medical dietary needs and children and talk about budgeting.
Moving to a new country can disrupt family rhythms. A class designed for parents navigating new routines and behaviors in their children. We will discuss the importance of sleep in children and explore ways to facilitate a bedtime routine for children at their respective ages. (depending on class demographic we may discuss safe sleeping habits/ co sleeping)
This class will help parents and older siblings understand how to keep the family safe on the internet. Topics will include protecting personal information and documents, recognizing scams, safe social media use and healthy screen time habits.
This class will concern safety in the home such as kitchen safety, importance of keeping batteries in fire and CO2 detectors, locking doors and keeping valuables safe. We will also discuss street safety such as riding bikes, crossing the street and learn about street signs.
A class that will help families learn ways to care for themselves. Topics will include hygiene practices in the US, exercise, nutrition, rest and importance of dental care.
