Abbot Dane Radecki, O. Praem., is preparing to conclude his service as the seventh elected abbot of the Norbertine Community of St. Norbert Abbey in De Pere. Among his many contributions and years of leadership, he will be especially remembered for his compassionate heart and his commitment to welcoming strangers to the Green Bay area.

For the past several years, the Norbertine Community of St. Norbert Abbey has been a valued partner of Catholic Charities, providing vital support to refugees through housing and other forms of assistance. Abbot Radecki played a key role in this partnership, particularly during the Afghan refugee crisis that began in late 2021.

In appreciation for his dedication, Catholic Charities organized a special reunion to honor Abbot Radecki’s impact. When asked what kind of thank-you gift would be most meaningful, Br. Steve Herro, O. Praem., suggested arranging an opportunity for Abbot Radecki to reconnect with some of the individuals and families the Norbertines had helped.

Just before Christmas, the Catholic Charities refugee team made that wish a reality. The Akbari family — 13 members strong — surprised Abbot Radecki at the Catholic Charities offices. The reunion was filled with joy, gratitude, and reflection on the journey they had shared.

When the Akbari family first arrived in Green Bay, finding housing was especially challenging given the family’s size. Abbot Radecki generously opened several rooms at the Norbertine Center for Spirituality, a place typically used for overnight retreats. The family quickly became part of the community, sharing meals and receiving support for their basic needs. Over time, strong friendships developed.

Abbot Radecki went above and beyond, teaching one of the boys how to drive and accompanying family members to shopping trips and medical appointments. These everyday acts of kindness made a profound difference as the family adjusted to life in a new country.

Reflecting on his time as abbot, he shared that working with newly arrived refugee families stands out as one of the most memorable experiences of his tenure.

On behalf of Catholic Charities and the refugee team, we extend our deepest gratitude to Abbot Radecki for his unwavering compassion and leadership. His efforts to welcome the strangers have changed lives and strengthened the Green Bay community. As he enters retirement, we wish him many blessings and continued joy in the years ahead.
