Citizenship Tutor Volunteer Description

As a citizenship tutor, you will be matched directly with an immigrant or refugee family and support them on their journey to becoming a citizen of the United States. The citizenship test is made up of three components: Correctly responding to a selection of 100 civics questions; confidently answering questions regarding their application (you are not responsible for completing this, as we have a team dedicated to this work); and successful completion of the reading and writing components. Your role will be supporting learners as they study and prepare using materials and strategies provided by the the Refugee Integration Services Team.

Who We Need

  • At least 21 years of age
  • Comfortable meeting learners in their home or nearby public areas
  • Openness to communicating in English to speakers of various levels
  • No other language skills required
  • Patience with adult learners who have limited educational backgrounds

How You'll be Prepared and Equipped for Success

  • 45-minute information session on role and program history
  • Training overview video on naturalization process
  • 1:1 in-person session with integration specialist
  • Pre-made lesson plans and workbooks
  • Support of Refugee Integration Services Team and Immigration Legal Services Team
  • Quarterly tutor support meetings

The Commitment

  • 1:1 tutoring w/ students in home or nearby community space
  • 1-2 meetings per week of at least of 45-60 minutes (plus prep time)
  • Weekdays, Evenings, or Weekends to meet learner need and your schedule
  • Minimum 6-month commitment to build learner rapport and impact
