English at Home Volunteers
English at Home Volunteer Description
As an English at home tutor, you will be matched directly with an immigrant or refugee family and support them on their journey to becoming confident and capable readers, writers, and speakers of English. Along the way, you will also receive training, materials, and support from the Refugee Integration Services Team to ensure you and your student’s success.
Who We Need
- At least 21 years of age
- Comfortable meeting learners in their home or nearby public areas
- Openness to communicating in English to speakers of various levels
- No other language skills required
- Patience with adult learners who have limited educational backgrounds
How You’ll Be Prepared and Equipped for Success
- 45-minute information session on role and program history
- Wisconsin Literacy ELL Tutor Training series
- 1:1 in-person session with integration specialist
- English Unlocked curriculum and materials
- Quarterly tutor support meetings
The Commitment
- 1:1 tutoring with students in home or nearby community space
- 1-2 meetings per week of at least of 45-60 minutes (plus prep time)
- Weekdays, evenings, or weekends to meet learner needs and your schedule
- Minimum six-month commitment to build learner rapport and impact
