National Volunteer Week will be celebrated April 21-27. This is an opportunity to shine a light on the people and causes that inspire others to serve. Volunteerism empowers individuals to find their purpose, taking their passion and turning it into meaningful change. When each of us, in our own way, answers the call to make a difference, we make progress in solving our most persistent problems and creating stronger communities. During this week, we would like to spotlight one of our dedicated volunteers who lends her time, talent, voice and resources to meet the critical needs of newcomers in our community.
Sherry Linden has been a proud resident of Green Bay for the past 11 years, bringing a wealth of experience and a heartfelt commitment to our community. Linden previously served as a volunteer naturalist in Seattle and San Diego, teaching environmental programs to school children. This experience laid the foundation for her passion for community, service and environmental education.
Over the past two years, Linden has been actively involved with Catholic Charities by helping resettle refugee families. Her first family faced language barriers, but she found great joy in communicating with the children through gestures and facial expressions. “Witnessing their eagerness to learn and progress was a rewarding experience,” said Linden. Subsequently, she has been working with three other families. Linden has assisted them with school enrollment, how to access local transportation and understanding local customs. Her greatest delight comes from spending time with the children, whether it’s tutoring or playing games. She has fostered a connection that often feels like she is part of their family.
Linden answered a call to volunteer with Catholic Charities because of the exceptional work being done in refugee resettlement, which establishes a supportive community where people can come together for classes and events. Catholic Charities has successfully balanced the integration of American and newcomer friends, and Linden views that as a true blessing. In a world often marred by religious intolerance, she has learned that unity is achievable through compassionate efforts. Catholic Charities is grateful to her and all the volunteers who help in our endeavors.
